GOOD THINGS DO COME
After not having much success during the past two hunting seasons, my
freezer was pretty much bare at the first of the year. I am proud of the
fact that after 11 years of living out in the woods I was able to stick
by my decision of not shooting any deer I wouldn't have mounted.
I keep a timed feeder full of corn all year long on the backside of the
lake about 90 yards from my back yard. I love watching the wildlife
it attracts. In addition to many deer, I have seen turkey, coon families,
possums, skunks, ducks, and of course the usual birds and squirrels. They
are all fun to watch.
On the freezing cold morning of January 4th, I awoke to find not only
the usual group of girls enjoying breakfast at the feeder, but accompanying
them was one particularly nice 8 point buck. He was being rather insistent
on being noticed by one of the does. It did not take me long to make a
decision.... go back to bed, or fill the freezer and put a nice trophy
on the wall...Hard one huh!
I grabbed my robe and slippers and headed for the gun cabinet in the
living room. After checking the clip and putting it in my 30-06, I slipped
out the kitchen door. Passing through to the side of the garage, I could
get a perfect view through the scope at the buck. I put him in my cross
hairs, removed the safety and pulled the trigger. He fell where he stood
and his love interest never flinched. My guess she was thanking me for
getting rid of him so she could eat in peace.
At exactly 200 lbs with a beautiful rack, he is by no means the biggest
deer I have ever taken. After years of scouting, stand building,
freezing and enduring the other prep work needed all in the hopes of just
seeing something, he was certainty the easiest one taken
He reaffirmed my belief in "Good things do come to those that wait"
